I saw young adults as being in the point of their lives when they have left childhood behind; however, I have come to realize that young adults are more proportioned as being half children half grown up. They are still childlike in many ways, and many will hold on to childish qualities much longer than others because they may be afraid to grow up. I also came to understand how the media uses products to influence people at this stage. This can range from what you’re supposed to look like, how you’re supposed to act, and how certain groups of people should be viewed (prejudices).
The composition of the Young Adult is a lot more complex that I could have originally thought. The influences are numerous and very powerful and affect every part of a Young Adults life. WIth out thinking about the different aspecs of music, hobbies, toys, movies, and culture, it is impossible to have a complete understanding of a Young Adult. The types of material that are exposed to Young Adults need to be carefully analyzed because negative influences are pervasive. Keeping and open and critical mind for oneself and instilling this in Young Adult is absolutely necessary.
Thinking back on my opening discussion, I believe my opinion does not change very drastically. Looking at all the different components that make up this Webquest, I believe that each equally effects the lives and identities of all young adults. Popculture has a huge influence on a child's interests and surroundings, also having the power to shape his or her beliefs. I believe that being a young adult in today's day in age is drastically different from fifty years ago, as it will be drasticallky different again in fifty years. As each generation is shaped and molded by pop culture, it is important to acknowledge that each individual of each generation is also shaped and molded uniquely.
I think that through the design of culture, adults tend to make identity issues for young adults more difficult. Though this is probably not intentional, particular stresses still exist. In today’s society identity is not nearly as clean cut as in the past. Gender is no longer simply male or female, and culture is now a mix of ethnicities and practices. Kids have to try to find themselves through this muddling of ideas. Yet often society still stresses the classic boy/girl dynamic and negative stereotypes associated with particular people. So, I think young adults have a lot more issues to deal with today by having to decide who they are in realtion to society rather than just themselves as a person.
Young Adults have a variety of different outside sources effecting them and their decisions, which in the end define who they are as an adult. It is very important to consider what we are teaching our children and what is really to "blame" when we think that children are less behaved, less respectful, or less responsible than how they "used to be." Because of all the influential media, role models, games, tv shows we have today, it is imperative to continually remind children of the importance of values and truths and how losing site of these things can take them down the wrong path. Because society imposes so many ideas and rules upon our kids today, it is our responsibility as future parents and educators to show children how to recognize the differences between wrong and right.
I still believe that young adulthood is the time for kids to really sort through their own beliefs and decide who they are. I could go on a rant about injustice and how terrible it is to expose our children to these things but honestly I think it is equally terrible not to expose them to it. This is our world. These things are things people create. This “world” is a construction of our society and our society is a construction of individuals. I am part of this construct of this society and being a young adult means being a construct of the society as well. Is it unfortunate what we construct collectively to make a society, in some aspects yes. But then I watch some films, read some books, look at some art, and most importantly, talk with some people and not everything seems so unfortunate or devastating. However, I do feel that adults often times blow these things out of proportion. As a young adult, I do not feel like I was truly worse for wear being exposed to unrealistically proportioned dolls, brutal violence, or racial caricatures. I won't say that it did not effect me, but I don't have a severely negative body image, a dis-sensitization of violence or consider myself a racist. While I don't condone the over exposure to these things necessarily, it is important to realize that they do also exist in the adult world and children need to be able to learn that not all that they hear, see, experience is right. While many adults often become out raged by the materials that children are exposed to, they forget that it is the adults that are making the products in the first place. All in all, the trials and tribulations of being a young adult involve figuring out the world around them.
