Specifically, the Indians are completely red and smoking, and Jasmine and Aladdin are in skimpy clothing. They all have accents; however, the Peter Pan clip and the Aladdin clip are heavily exaggerated. The Indians talk like they smoked so much they might as well have holes in throats, and the merchant, well you can just tell its Robin Williams. I felt like the characters in The Princess and the Frog had more realistic voices, and that is due to the fact that they had black women and men play their parts, not Robin Williams playing an Arabian man. When I drew my witch and devil, they did look similar to that of the Disney villains. Specifically, the long pointed chin and big nose stood out. When looking at the Nazi propaganda flyer, I noticed that they chose to portray the Jewish people as similar looking villains, with long noses and horrific facial details. I feel they did this because our society is so accustomed to the media feeding us images of what is attractive, ugly, or horrific. By paralleling the Jews to that of Disney villains, society will instinctively form a bias against them and see them as frightening, threatening, and dangerous.
The native american characters in the disney movie Peter Pan are show to resemeble animal like creatures. The skin color of these individuals are greatly exaggerated to be a bright red color which strengthens the stereotype of the idian being a red man. The lyrics to the songs that are also being sung by the native americans mention being "taught". The reason the indian says "how" is because they lack a basic understanding. This is a dangerous portrayal of native americans and it is quite apalling that Disney would do something like this to strengthen prejudice towards a group of people. Information that is being shown to children needs to be fair and just and there is no place for any bias.
The characters in the three Disney movies portray a variety of cultures. I believe the least embellished is The Princess and the Frog, because its more modern. If the two earlier films were created now, there would most likely be more controversy about the depictions of the ethnicities. For example, in Peter Pan, some of the indians have bright red skin, which is definitely a discriminative statement. I believe the characters with the more exaggerated features are created in a certain way so that the audience knows they are the villians. The villians in the three clips are drawn in a way that make them less relatable to the audience, wheter it be in a scary way or a comedic way. This exxageration is very similar to the propoganda posters used by the Nazis.
The earlier Disney films carry greater stereotypes and are lesssensitive to ethnic differences. The “Red Men” in Peter Pan are portrayed as easily excited and negative to women. Their skin color is obviously not accurate (the chief kind of looks like a tomato). Plus their language seems less developed and backward. In Aladdin the introductory refers to his own culture as barbaric, he has an unrealistically oversized, swishy turban and is a shyster salesman. He is representing the nation and does not seem like a pleasant person. Then the later movie represents a strong, independent female… Who happens to be American. This movie is more sensitive to the stereotype of African Americans.

I think we often see people who look different as wrong or bad. We can see this in Disney’s villians. They often have very strange, severe characteristics. Such as in Aladdin, Jafar is overly tall and gaunt, making hin semm “scary.” Captain Hook in Peter Pan also shares these characteristics. However, I LOVE Disney and it's clear why many children love Disney films as well.

After watching the videos, it is even more clear now how each character, whether hero or villian, is portrayed. Usually the hero/prince and princess are lighter skin and speak standard English. Whereas the villians or supporting characters are of dark decent and speak in an accent. I noticed that they also have facial hair (usually black). Although we notice these things as adults, the stereotypes probably go unrecognized by children who watch the movies. When I was younger, I never thought twice about the color of skin or accents used by characters. I simply just wanted to princess and prince to end up together. Not every film created by Disney uses racial stereotypes--Beauty and the Beast for example, or Mulan.

The newer movie, The Princess and the Frog I think is excellent. All the characters speak in New Orleans accent/AAEV. Disney has never done anything like this before and I think this shows that they are trying to change the racial persona that originally existed.
Now let me first off say that I love Disney. But stereotyping people is something has literally existed since human beings have existed. I have noticed in movies like Aladdin that while the main character is always someone very relateable: they usually speak standard american english, their looks are very european, and they generally stand for ideals that americans would agree with. The side characters and villians are often portrayed a little differently though. In Aladdin, all the people in the market place speak with heavy accents, have huge noses and beards, and seem more violent. Jafar as the villian is very oddly presented since he seems to be a mix. He looks rather Arab (even though his body is impossibly skinny) but speaks with a very distinguished accent. IN Peter Pan, the Native Americans, who are allies of Peter Pan, are literally red skinned and say stereotypical things like "how". Captain Hook, although he speaks with an accent that the audience would appreciate, is presented with exaggerated facial features that make us just think he must be evil next to the cute Peter Pan and Wendy. Now I think Princess and the Frog did a pretty good job in presenting people. I know they had some people saying that the movie was racist I tend to disagree. The movie is set in the 1920's and in the south in the 20's would it really be believable to present a heroine who didn't deal with racial issues? They all speak in New Orleans accents (except for the prince) and so they are all equal on that level. Do I think that some people pull their opinions of other people from movies? of course. I grew up with Disney and have always been curious about other cultures but even I sometimes think that something was a little too stereotypical for my tastes. As far as how villians are presented I think the main idea to portraying an evil character is to make something about them not sit quite right in their appearance and attitude. Jafar is very strange to look at but almost believable when he talks. Dr. Facilier is another silver-tongued villian but something about the way he is drawn instinctively makes us distrust him. It's interesting how much looks actually do play a role in how we judge someone.
After drawing my sketch of a witch and a devil, i realized my drawing matched Disney's portrayal of these characters almost to a "T" because Disney were the ones responsible for putting those assumed images in my head. Good people are blonde and white, bad people are not. Bad people have thicker "accents" and are less realistic. I'm not sure but I'm sure people find gripes with even The Princess and The Frog perhaps because the main character does not speak in AAEV so she is not legitimately black? Who really knows? What I do know is that I can be equally critical but criticisms about the racism and injustice of everything does start to get on my nerves. Yes, we live in a racist, sexist, ageist, and terrible world. Yes that is a bummer. But yes, I think there are steps, I think there are positives and I think few people want to focus on them. Instead we dwell on the negatives, point out each other's flaws and pat ourselves on the backs for being revolutionaries. I wish I could instead be more self-reflective, inwardly cynical because as good old Ghandi says, "you are the change you wish to see in the world."
