I remember thinking, how could video games replace literature? Then my teacher explained the similarities; video games have complex characters, character development, setting, plot, symbolism, and themes. In addition, young adult male literature focused on action, violence, weapons, and chaos; therefore, video games are basically young adult male novels in a different medium. Video games are more favorable due to a number of different factors. First, they are fast paced; therefore, most young adults can get through a game faster than a novel. Also, they get to see what is happening, rather than trying to visualize the scene. They also get to engage deeper within the story; they are no longer a bystander, but influence the sequence of events. In addition, they are getting exposed to themes from YAML, such as action, violence, weapons, wars, and battles. Therefore, I do not agree with the perspective of the lawyer who is attempting to ban video games due to extreme violence. If the same death scenes, murders, and violence shown in video games can be expressed in literature than what makes the games any worse? I agree with the teacher, that humanity understands the difference between fantasy and reality. If they are going to re-create these violent acts shown in video games than there is something psychologically wrong. So one might make the argument that psychologically disturbed people will re-create the violence so the games should be banned; however, I would argue that these types of people are suffering from something beyond the control of regulating video games. They don’t need to see a violent scene in a game to commit a violent act; therefore, video games have no link to violent behavior. Why people crave violence I will never understand, but I think it makes things more exciting, and the fact that it is fantasy makes it ok for humans to enjoy violence.
Video games in my opinion promote violent behavior, language, and encourages some young adults to act out. After working at a summer camp for four years and seeing the reactions kids from the ages of 7 to 14 years old, it is clear that many used video games as an excuse and a reason to act out. There were many other kids that didn't not act out and I knew they were playing violent video games. What is the difference between the two? Was it that some students are more prone to being violent? This may be true but I think the more pressing matter is the parenting of the children. There parents must talk to there children about this and teach them what is and is not acceptable. The duty is on the parents, video games are not entirely to blame.
Video games are a fairly new phenomenon amongst young adults, and with that they are undergoing vast developments. There are such a variety of video games that exist in modern that technology, that teens' preferences for each can be drastically different. There are racing games, educational games, sports games, and of course violent shooting games. I believe this variety is a reflection of the large variety of people in society today. I can't say I have lived in other generations to know whether or not that was true for them as well. But, in modern day there are so many different types of people, which is why such stereotypes exist.

While video games in general have a bit of a malovelent repuation, it is violent games specifically that have the worst. With a violent change in culture, such as bomb threats and school shootings, it is only normal that there is a huge controversy dwelling over shooting games. However in my own opinion I don't think every child that enjoys these games should be considered at risk for violent behaviors. Children that experience severe risks are victims of many external factors. I believe with appropriate supervision and mature playing, shooting and war games are harmless. As a child, my grandpop and I used to play James Bond together on nintendo and it was a pleasant bonding experience for us both, not a threat to society.
What do the different kinds of games suggest to you about what it means to be a young adult?

I play games on my computer at least once a day. I don't see anything wrong with games as long as students aren't playing them during class time or something like that.

As for violent video games, I don't see anything wrong with those as well, as long as gamers are mature enough to understand the difference between reality and fantasy. When I was in 4th or 5th grade I used to play Grand Theft Auto with my brother all the time. Mostly you just go around and steal cars from people. I obviously didn't try to do this in real life because I was smart enough to know it was wrong, plus my parents obviously nurtured me in a way when I was younger that lead to my realization between right and wrong. The man in the video clip that argues against violent games seems to be coming from a religious affiliated background, which is probably one of his argumenst in why video games are bad. He's probably against gay marriage too because that's apparently "wrong" as well. If there was enough evidence and upset parents reguarding violence's effect on children, I'm sure we would be hearing about it a lot more, and I'm sure there would be have been larger steps to put an end to it by now. But the fact is, most children are smart enough to realize it is only a game and do not take it passed that. If you are mentally and morally grounded, you know that violence can be part of the fantasy world, but not in the real world.
As with the toys, these games take advantage of current popular things, such as movies. Though there is a section specifically designated “Girl Games” the top games involve shooting, cars, motorcycles, or violence suggesting a male dominance. Several of these games just seem silly, and therefore might act as an escape from reality for kids. The games are created around the notion of what society thinks young adults would like. There are even categories for girls and boys, suggesting that only girls will the like the games provided the girl category and vice versa for boys. It is really up to you to choose what kind of game to play. As to violent video games, I know that I played shooting games as I grew up, and they did not make me into a violent person. I think as people reach young adulthood, I believe parents need to make sure that their children are aware that it is entirely fictional, and it is not acceptable in the real world. There does need to be a line though. I do believe there are different levels of violence, and adolescents should not be exposed to all of them.
I tried the mug shot matchup and found it very educational about the effects of meth use which is a good message to give young adults. I believe it showed that game creatures know that they have the ability to affect children and mold their thinking by providing images to dissuade them from using meth. That is why I think there is a problem with games that are heavily violent. I watch men that are fully grown get very emotional and angry while playing things like call of duty. People who never curse are suddenly spewing out multiple profanities. The titles from the clip alone unsettled me, "Stab a Hooker" really? The teacher made the argument that children can tell the difference between reality and fiction and so the games do not cause violence. There is a major flaw in that argument. Children learn from fiction every day. Many books have been used to teach moral lessons with no bases in reality. Propaganda has started wars and destroyed countries. Constant exposer to an idea especially at a malleable age makes it more acceptable. Fiction can have an effect on decisions in real life. YA are at the age where they are deciding right and wrong for many the impact may be very small but it's still there.
The different kinds of games suggest that young adults enjoy games that require some degree of strategy and urgency, but require little thought or skill.

As for the video game question, I'm torn. I definitely agree with the history teacher that it comes down to parental guidance. A child should be taught the difference between reality and fantasy and it should be taught by the parents. On the other hand, I don't think I will allow my children to play such blatantly violent games such as "Stab a Hooker" or games that glorify other illegal activities, such as the "Grand Theft Auto" series. Yes, he or she will probably know the difference between reality and fantasy, but it all comes down to the "garbage in, garbage out" principle. Even if children never overtly act out on what they see or participate in vicariously through video game characters, he or she will still be affected by it. The same applies to graphic movies, novels, and website. If you would never do it in real life, you shouldn't be filling your mind with it.
