The Donald Duck clip represents the horrifying associations people make when they imagine maturing, and growing up. These boys are heavily struggling with maturation; they go through an emotional outburst as their Uncle attempts to push them into growing up. When Donald attempts to conduct a sophisticated activity with them (playing music) they quickly become bored and rebel against growing up. They almost revert back to childhood, as they play immature tricks on their Uncle just to get a laugh out of it. In addition, young adults are often thought of as wild, uncontrollable, devils. His nephews are full of energy, and can’t even enter the door without playing a chaotic game. At the dinner table, we another sign of how short their attention spans are when they can’t even sit still through the prayer. We also see that they are in a developmental stage, and are growing, so they feel the need to stuff their faces with food. Finally, we see how complex young adults are; you are not going to be able to understand or control them through a step by step manual. They’re experience through young adult hood will be a rollercoaster that will only slow down through aging.

The other clip represents the positive associations people make when they imagine growing up. Here the little girl is forming her identity by trying to make sense of the world around her. She considers customs that her culture is accustomed too. In addition, she observes her mother in great detail from her clothes to the way she walks. I think she is using her mother as a guide, or model into what she sees herself as developing into.

By comparing the two clips, a lot of insights become apparent. First of all, a common belief in society is that girls mature faster than boys. This is reflected heavily in the clips as Donald’s nephews are reckless and the little girl is peaceful and content. This says something about behavior as well; girls are expected to have manners, be neat and tidy, and content. If Donald had three nieces, the clip would have a very different angle. In addition, even though both clips portray young adults, we see that they both still maintain child like features. The boys are constantly hyper and playing games and the girl is still being tucked in by her mother at night. This is important because it shows they are not children, but not quite adults yet either. Overall, both clips portray maturation as a struggle, but in very different ways. The boys struggle through rebelling, and reverting back to childhood, while the girl struggles with forming her identity through the qualities of others.
I believe both of these clips reflect the lives of young adults very differently. In the Donald Duck clip, it represents what I mentioned before- Teen Rebellion. The boys are most likely being influenced by one another to act up at their Uncle Donald's house. Donald however feeds into the misconception that young adults are black and white. While he is dependent on his little book to give him answers to his problems, the audience knows that the book does not apply to all children, especially his 3 nephews.

The second clip however is quite different from the first one in that it deals with the cultural effects on young people. The diverse children are all talking about different aspects of their lives, and it is clear those aspects have a significant effect on them. The parents are very influential in this clip.
Donald Duck Clip – Rambunctious, anti-authoritarian, trouble makers, easy to blame others, ill mannered, mischievous/playful, can’t follow a rule book to raise kids.

I found the Donald Duck clip to be more accurate or perhaps thorough in the portrayal of young adults. I think it is important to note that both clips show children to have a dependency on adults. The first one portrays the obstacles young adults may face, being stuck between a child and a mature young adult. This film uses a comical picture to provide a lesson to young adults. It’s okay to have fun and be a kid again once in a while, but it is important to find your mature identity as well. This clip teaches young adults how children grow and to always remember that they are still children. The second clip portrays a young child who is learning to grow through her mother and culture. She shows her viewers how to learn about culture in a simple way and by teaching young adults through a simple poem. When comparing these clips I look at the simplicity and comical side to them. I see the similarities and how young adults can use these clips to gain a new perspective on life.
What visions of what it means to be a Young Adult does each clip convey?

In the Donald Duck video, the cartoon shows the mischievious side of children. In this video, I don't think his nephews have quite reached the YA stage, but are still in the process of leaning what it means. With all their pranks and rambunctious behaviors, they are not interested in complying to what Donald expects from them as stated in the manual he consults. Because all the techniques he uses fail, I think this shows that their is no book or "rules" you can really follow when raising Young Adults because they are all different. I believe every child goes through this wreckless stage where the only concern is having fun, and quite often making a mess. We all, at one point or another, cause trouble just the same way Donald's nephews do, but we usually can get away with it because we are only children. I can think of a couple times where my brother and I would cause pandemonium but I never saw my mom's response as punishment, only a consequence that was still worth it. Eventually, you put an end to these behaviors because you begin to realize it only makes other people unhappy with you, and I wanted to put an end to that.

The second clip I actually remember watching when I was little!!! (I always thought that coconut milk looked really good). This Sesame Street clip shows the good side of young adults; most young adults have both qualities: the rebellious behaviors in the nephews, as well as the one where all you really want is your mom to tuck you in at night. It is important to remmeber this because even though you grow out of your rambunctious, destructive age, I feel as if we all still want to be close with our moms no matter how old we get. This ties in to why we stop being obnoxious kids as I said before: we start to realize how behaviors make other people unhappy, and at the end of the day, you want your mom to be happy with you and bring you coconut milk when you go to sleep!!

What does comparing them make you think?

The differences are distinct in the two videos because you get to see both sides of young adults. Sometimes we forget that we were all that age at one point. I think it is important to remember the type of behaviors our parents had to put up with when we were younger. Looking back, I was a brat on occasion but I was still a smart kid that knew what I was capable of. We should keep this in mind any time we encounter a young adult that was think is uninformed or unintelligent because of their obnoxious or immature behavior. Kids are smarter than they lead on, they just know how to play their cards right when dealing with "grown ups.
The first video clip shows that a book is not going to help anyone raise a child. It is all about trial and error and personal experience. Each child is different a book that generalizes all children isn't going to help much. Also, Donald's nephews were not thinking about what they were doing. They were just acting on impulse as most young adults do. Young adults do things for instant satisfaction; they think little about the consequences.

The second clip shows how the girls are aware of their surrounding. They do not think that their world is the only world. It shows how at even a young age children and young adults see the differences in people. It also shows how when growing up your mother is usually the one who you relate to the most and who is the most compassionate.
The first clip seems to convey that children are rambunctious and unruly and they need an older more mature figure to control them. I am not sure where a young adult comes into play with either of these clips. Is Donald Duck the young adult? If so, this shows that being a young adult means being able to take care of others even if unsuccessfully because at the end he resorts to similarly unruly behavior as the children.

The second clip is at least culturally aware for Sesame Street. As for what it means to be a young adult, well, the little girl seems reliant on her mother and seems to be just repeating things that others have told her. It doesn’t get too deep.

What does comparing them make you think?

The first clip shows Donald's young adult nephews playing in his house. They are depicted as being wild and care free. They knock things down and cause destruction wherever they go. As Donald tries to focus their energy on a common goal (playing instruments) they become easily distracted and more interested in playing pranks on their uncle.

The second clip shows a small child describing where she lives, what her home life is like and how she identifies with the world around her.
