I really enjoyed the style of this book. In some ways I was able to connect with Jimmi’s character. I feel like the style was very similar to how I enjoy writing. Beginning in high school when I began to struggle to figure out who I was and where I fit in the world I would place my emotions into poetic form. Reading some of Jimmi’s poetry just brought many of my own thoughts. Even simple things like when he writes, “why?” really connected with me. I would sit in classes and make a collage out of the word why. I really think this story would have meant a lot to me had I read it a little earlier in my life. Now it’s a bit more reflective. He’s later poem, “Why do angels fly toward lightning?” brought back the emotions I felt during my depression early in collage. He captures that struggle to have someone show us a way. I continually found the poetry powerful and evoked emotions from my past. I think it’s a universal thing for humans to feel lost time and time again in their life and I love to express that in ways very similar to Jimmi with in writing. After all it was writing that released me from my depression. It was the guide to a way out and its easy to see how Jimmi uses it as a powerful outlet.
I think this story is great for young adults. I love reading something that makes me realize how I feel isn’t a rare case. It’s something others go through and understand and I think poetry has a unique ability to evoke powerful emotions. When I feel pain my thoughts come out in poetic form. I use to feel strange for doing that. It seemed like other people all dealt with problems in a more “normal” way and there I was comparing how I felt to burning glass in chemistry class. It seems that young adults often feel that they are the only ones going through certain issues and emotions and books like this really help show you’re not alone.
